Ingrid Michaelson – the TLA, Philadelphia

At the TLA on Sunday night, I expected to hear a tight set of beautiful indie folk pop. What I didn’t expect was for Ingrid Michaelson to have me in stitches throughout her entire set. Her stage banter is truly second to none due to the fact that she is a self-proclaimed ham. She made it known that Philadelphia is a city she holds near and dear since it’s the first place she played outside of hometown New York. She was amazed and excited to pack out the TLA when her first show in Philadelphia was held at the Tin Angel, a small second floor space, playing to about 65 people.

Michaelson totally owned the place and had the crowd wrapped around her laser fingers (pictured), having them agree to someday attend a show of hers in ball gowns and tuxedos. Her beautiful voice transfixed the audience until she begged them to sing along: “If you don’t sing along, you’re making me unhappy and bitter.” The audience happily obliged, singing along to everything from hit single “The Hat” to album favorites “Die Alone” and “Breakable” and spontaneous covers of “Edelweiss” and the “Full House” theme song a cappella. The “Full House” theme song sing along was followed by a series of trivia questions in the vein of Ingrid’s quest for the “Full House” house.

Ingrid Michaelson is most definitely someone you want to see live. If gorgeous vocals, sweet lyrics and a well-played ukulele aren’t your thing (I don’t even want to talk to you if that’s the case), then you’re sure to fall in love with Ingrid Michaelson based on personality and wit alone. She’s the kind of person you immediately want to be best friends with, and for that, we should all be highly jealous of her guitarist and “musical sister” Allie Moss ( pictured below). You can catch Michaelson on tour throughout the summer (dates below), opening for Dave Matthews Band on select dates, ending the summer with Austin City Limits. Make it your business to see one of the most entertaining and talented artists in today’s industry.
