The Jealous Girlfriends – The Jealous Girlfriends

Since The Jealous Girlfriends are labeled as an indie band, it’s a pretty safe bet to assume that they’ve made sure to cover their indie-rock bases. For starters, they sport shared male and female harmony vocals. They feature more than one piano. They have the ability to place Grey’s Anatomy on their resumé. They certainly fit the stereotype.

In this particular case, that stereotype may work to their advantage. This Brooklyn four-piece flawlessly finds a way to exist outside that box while also remaining inside of it. With a clutter of piano and guitars under smooth female vocals, easing their way towards a top heavy drum pattern that balanced its rhythm with the steady beat of Alex Lipsen‘s electric synthesizer, the group manages to create an product virtually overflowing with hooks catchy enough to get the hardest hipsters to shakes their asses.

The album’s vocals, which are shared by both Josh Abbott and Holly Miranda, bounce from male to female to male again, creating a very balanced and harmonic feel. With all things considered, the album itself reminds me more of Brit-pop than anything else. Not that that’s a bad thing.

This album is definitely worth checking out. Look for it in store now on Good Fences Records.
