Ra Ra Riot: Jackpot Saloon — Lawrence, Kansas

It’s not everyday that you hear a band with cellos and violin open a show with the statement “We’re here to party!” But don’t let the strings fool you; this is not a night at the symphony. Ra Ra Riot knows how to brings the noise. With a bit of a wall of sound element applying to their music under vocals that could possibly be compared to that of Hot Hot Heat‘s Steve Bays, the band honestly is more dance hall than concert hall. They’re also one of the best young bands around.

In their first ever stop in Lawrence, Ks., their poppy tunes seem to go over as well as one could expect. Their set comes out of nowhere, with three quick and in your face numbers before slowing down on the night’s fourth cut, which could be comfortably be compared with the likes of Azure Ray. What I find the most impressive is the effectiveness of the band in both sounds; neither really seems to dominate the other, and I could easily find myself pleased listening to a set going either way.

I look for this band to be on the tips of everyone’s tongues in the near future. Honestly, I’m relatively surprised that they’re not already, as they are in my opinion, music’s best kept secret. With songwriting this catchy, and hooks overflowing with beautiful strings and flowing bass, it should take long for this band to spread like wildfire. The word of mouth alone should be enough to do so. Because as I see it, there are two types of people; those who love Ra Ra Riot, and those who have yet to hear them.
