Ohio duo mr. Gnome unleashes an original and exciting debut album, Deliver This Creature, on May 6th that sounds like Cat Power got lost at a Death From Above 1979 concert. Nicole Barille and Sam Meister started mr. Gnome as a means of experimenting with minimalist and drummer instrumentation, soft vs. loud, and feminine vs. masculine. Their first single “Pirates” is now available for free download (here!)
The pair blend altrock, metal, post punk and prog rock elements to create a unique and compelling indie rock sound sure to delight. Together since 2005, mr. Gnome has released two EPs and drawn comparisons to such greats as Massive Attack, PJ Harvey, and Blonde Redhead. While notable acts to be compared to, mr. Gnome currently defies classification since a truly adequate description of their sound isn’t yet available as violence and aggression mixes with beautiful and catchy melodies and some unique musical experimentation.
Their debut album was written and recorded as the band was officially homeless, spending much of 2007 touring the country in a van and crashing on random couches whenever available. They happened upon Jackpot Studios in Portland, Or. (where Elliott Smith and The Decemberists have recorded) and Wavelab Studios in Tuscon, Az. (where DeVotchKa and Animal Collective have recorded) and set to work tracking their debut full-length. The album was mixed in Madison, Wi. by Beau Sorenson, who’s worked with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie.
Currently scheduled to play Detroit’s The Belmont on March 15th and Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Kaysan’s 5th Down on March 21st, mr. Gnome is scheduling dates for May to promote the new record.
