Forest City Lovers – Haunting Moon Sinking

The Canadian music scene has really been solidifying my love for it recently (Creature, The Stills) and Toronto’s Forest City Lovers is no exception. Kat Burns, Mika Posen and Kyle Donelly, together with a slew of different drummers, have created the beautiful Haunting Moon Sinking set to release in Canada on March 11, 2008.

Several weeks ago, the band lost drummer Paul Weadick, but have since replaced him with Steve Lappano, who will play the band’s CD release show on March 14th and continue through the eastern Canada tour.

Haunting Moon Sinking begins with the bouncy, Mirah-like “Don’t Go,” featuring the talented Mika plucking the violin (an instrument which more bands need!) against beautiful keyboard melodies and a slightly smoky but sweet-voiced Kat.The girls’ well-honed pop sensibilities, along with those of Kyle (bass/guitar/vocals), has produced an album chock full of well-crafted pop-synth tunes bursting with melody and beauty.

“Pirates (Can’t All Sail The Indian Ocean)” utilizes a maritime beat similar to, but lighter than, that in The Decemberists‘ “Mariner’s Revenge.” It’s a bit darker in melody and the vocals almost sound like they belong to Ingrid Michaelson. “Pirates” gives way to “Watching the Streetlights Grow,” a soft and sad melody played out by beautiful keyboards. “Two Hearts” features more of Mika’s string talents and further displays the range of vocals, this time sounding like Maura Davis (Denali, Ambulette). “Monsters” is a haunting tune with vocals reminiscent of the gorgeously-voiced Emily Haines (& the Soft Skeleton, Metric) and, again, a beautiful violin part.

The disc ends with the upbeat “Orphans,” bringing the album to a full circle of sound. Haunting Moon Sinking is a beautiful and powerful album for both those into haunting melodies and those who want to dance around to bouncy sounds. Be sure to pick up a copy today!
