First Look: She & Him

There once was a time when entertainers were practically required to be talented in the fields of acting, singing, and dancing before they’d be granted a contract by a major film studio. Since the early 20th century, the roles of entertainers have changed as actors and musicians honed their own special craft in favor of extending themselves. Presently, it almost seems laughable when an actor or actress decides to break into music; the motives seem more economical than anything else. Many talented actresses have broken into music but lacked what it takes to find success or longevity in the music business (think Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alyssa Milano).

The more obscure/indie actors and actresses have been far more successful in breaking into the music business (think Rilo Kiley, Jason Schwartzman, Jared Leto) and She & Him, featuring the wildly talented Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, should be no exception. Deschanel and Ward met two years ago when working on a movie soundtrack. The two immediately clicked and Deschanel confessed that she privately recorded songs on her home computer. M convinced her into letting him listen and was instantly impressed with what he heard and the two got to work in his studio shortly thereafter.

Deschanel’s voice is absolutely gorgeous and is perfectly complimented by Ward’s guitar playing. Later this year, the pair will be releasing a record featuring 9 original songs written by Deschanel along with covers of a Beatles song and a Miracles song.
