Fidel Castro Resigns

Fidel Castro, who has not been publicly seen for 19 months, has resigned as Cuba’s President. In the summer of 2006 he gave his brother Raúl temporary power whilst the Communist President underwent emergency surgery for an acute infection in his colon. Castro has resigned due to his failing health, which makes it impossible for him to continue his reign over the island nation.

This ends the longest tenure of an omnipotent, Communist leader. According to a written statement Castro “will not aspire to, neither will I accept — I repeat I will not aspire to neither will I accept — the position of President of the Council of State and Commander in chief.”

Castro’s brother Raúl, Vice President Carlos Lage Davila, and foreign minister Felipe Perez Roque could all be in contention for the open Presidency. Cuba’s National Assembly was to meet this coming Sunday to discuss the country’s power structure since its now former leader had fallen ill, but no word yet on how the country shall progress following Castro’s surprise announcement of resignation.
